~The Ant Creation Myth~
Many millions of years ago, before the earth had been created, two holy beings rested within the universe when so barren that only they existed. One of these beings lived within an area of the universe where stars clustered and light was much more present, this being was the Great Queen Ant. In an area opposite to the Queen Ant lived the Great King Ant-Eater. The King Ant-Eater's part of the universe carried almost no stars and was very dark. One day, the King Ant-Eater became intensely annoyed with light that shone from the Queen Ants part of the Universe, and so the King Ant-Eater thought it best fit to end the Queen Ant's life in an attempt to stop the light. So, the King Ant-Eater traversed the great distance and confronted the Queen Ant. The Queen Ant , as kind as she was, was quick to start arguing with the Ant-Eater and spreading hate. The King Ant-Eater had realized on his way that this fight might not be the best way to settle things and oddly resigned ti a fight he would usually be eager to participate in. They began to hit one another aggressively. The fighting lasted for weeks. Eventually both the Queen Ant and King Ant-Eater became so week neither could go on. They both collapsed into each other and formed a giant mass of land. The land was equal parts Ant(good) and Ant-Eater(bad). This balance was also found within the shape their spirits took. The Ant's soul became a giant source of light shining on the land. The Ant-Eaters soul became a giant rock in the sky, casting a shadow the width of half the world. The events that led to the Great Fight, also known as the Big Bang, were caused by the evil in the good and was attempted to be stopped by the good in the evil, showing that even within each realm of good and evil resides a little of the other.
The creation story above was inspired by the Iroquois creation myth, "The World on the the Turtle's Back." Specifically, the story was inspired by "the right-handed twin [who] wanted to be born the normal way...[and] the left handed twin said no"(Iroquois). This conflict of two beings is represented in the ant creation story. As well, later in the Iroquois creation story, the good child kills the grandmother, this evil that resides in the good is represented in my piece when the Ant is the one that starts the fight. Overall, the Ant Creation Story is a fun piece that isn't intended to mock creation stories but rather play with them and add fun!

The idea that the universe is ruled by a good and a bad force is very prevalent in many creation stories that I’ve read. In your opinion, how do these good and bad forces mix into our everyday lives?
ReplyDeleteI liked your story and the twist and change you made from the turtle's back story; i thought it was very funny. Maybe check for spelling mistakes next time?

DeleteThe way this is written is very good. You were able to use a sense of humor to create a creative and interesting creation story. Most importantly is the combination of that humor and creativity is tying it back to the values in creation stories that we learned about. In this case there was a lot of good vs evil. That being said, if you were to re-write this would you ass more things such as cultural values, social structure etc?
ReplyDeleteI loved this creative and well written piece! You can tell you put in a lot of thought and effort into the story. I was wondering, is there a specific reason that you chose to make the characters King and Queen instead of making them just an anteater and ant?
